Dumfries and Galloway
Arts Festival

Dumfries and Galloway Arts Festival
Castle Douglas Welcome to Dumfries & Galloway Arts Festival. Our 9-day festival has taken place annually at the end of May since 1979. The founding aim was to bring international performers of the highest quality to a region containing many scattered rural communities that would not otherwise have the opportunity to experience such talent.
Since then, this region has produced some of its own talent of international standing and we’re proud to be able to present these artistes from time to time. We offer a wide range of events: music – including classical, jazz and folk, dance, theatre, literary, children’s events, plus the visual arts and films. The growing number of children’s events in recent years plus a revitalised literary programme added to our strong music, dance and theatre tradition has, we believe, enhanced the programme we offer

Angela Lawrence Clience Studio

castle douglas Angela Lawrence Clience Studio
Castle Douglas Ongoing Exhibitions
This welcoming gallery and studio in the main street of Castle Douglas shows paintings, as well as prints and art-gifts by owner Angela Lawrence. Seascapes and landscapes of Galloway are a principal subject, including Sandyhills, Kippford, Rockcliffe, Carrick, Cardoness, Mossyard and the Galloway hills but other locations, e.g. the Western Isles, and imagined places also feature. The sea itself is a recurrent theme, for which Angela won a Visual Arts Award. Her paintings are in oil, occasionally watercolour, and have an immediacy which brings the freshness and atmosphere of both country and coast inside.
Angela is commissioned and exhibits widely, including at the RGI annual exhibitions, Paisley Institute, and Gracefield Arts Centre Dumfries. She is pleased to be participating in Dumfries and Galloway’s Spring Fling Open Studio event for her eleventh year in May, with a new series based on a Solway coastal walk from Sandyhills to Mossyard.

Hazel Campbell

castle douglas Hazel Campbell artist
Castle Douglas Hazel Campbell has lived and worked in Galloway for most of her adult life, and through attendance at painting classes over a number of years she has developed her own vigorous style of painting. She has a loose, bold approach, working mainly in oil and gouache, using local Galloway countryside as a stimulus for landscape painting. Still life and flowers are also subjects, and like the landscapes, are being treated in an increasingly broad manner.
Hazel runs painting schools during the summer from her studio on the family farm. These are proving to be very popular, with her students having scope to paint in the adjoining garden and surrounding countryside.
